Kailua High School’s annual performance celebrating hula, mele, and Hawaiʻi. Welo is not only a way for students to showcase what they have learned throughout the school year, but also a meaningful gathering for our extended learning community, including families, cultural practitioners, and other community leaders.
Like many words in Hawaiian, Welo encompasses various definitions. It translates to both one's progeny and ancestry, as well as a family trait or group custom, while also meaning the setting of the sun and the fluttering of a flag in the wind. Our interpretation, then, for Welo is a tradition in our community that keeps in mind those who came before us and those yet to come, coupled with a sense of beauty and pride invoked by the moving imagery of the setting sun and Hawaiian flag.
